Hi

I have an on-line site and have exchanged links and have tried other little advertisements without sucess. I have a google adwords account but no sooner as I put money on this its gone.

Any ideas for really cheap advertising. I thought that I was doing very well money wise but I have virtually none left to spend.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Lisa

With regard the links don't give up hope - it can take several months for these to have a rankings impact.

Also if your site has been online for less than a year or so it may not have it's "true" rankings yet due to new sites generally getting lower rankings.

Have you tried advertising on free listings / advert websites?

Tim

Hi Lisa

Try listing on gumtree and craigslist and the other well used listings directories. May be a way to generate some business or at least get some links in to help drive traffic.

Have you looked at the SEO side of your website and targetting the content to your key search phrases?

Are you using your web stats to work out what is working well and what's not working so well on your site?

Hi Lisa

I would agree with the advice to try all the free listings directories.

Also a good idea would be to get listed on the google shopping feature which used to be called froogle - I think this is now called google base. I believe getting good listings there can be a really big help with sales.

Great point David, forgot to mention that, but it can certainly be a big plus.

From what I understand, link, link and then link some more. Or pay someone else to do it for you!

Any tips on how to use Google Base or get the most from it... what are the technical elements to it?

You should get some Books for dummies like Online Marketing for Dummies, SEO for Dummies, and Adwords for dummies.

Adwords will cost you a bit to get a campaign going that is actualy profitable, for me less that .5% of my keywords I tried actualy make me a direct profit.

As for the SEO stuff just dont give up is all I can say, I suddenly had a doubling of traffic after I hit the one year mark. Also this timed with having a company submit me manualy to a thousand directories which I would reccomend also. I am pretty sure I have already got my money back from that one.

That's quite interesting and accords with the idea that often it can take around a year for a website to get given its full "ranking points".

I have had several clients in the past pay for directory listing services and it never seems to make any difference, however I am willing to believe there could be some useful ones out there if they submit to the right directories!

I think it depends on the directories, mine were all done manually, there was an Indian company that did it for me. They were not just spam directories.

They sent me screen shots of all the submission forms they used, and they were all PR3-PR5.
I don't know if it was my one year anniversary or it being about two months after all the submissions, but suddenly my organic traffic just jumped up about 70% which seemed to happen the same time as the Goggle Tool bar Page rank update.

I understand the tool bar update is not supposed to do anything for my traffic, so it is all a bit of a mystery what actually happened. Maybe I just moved out of the Sandbox.
