Advertising or PR?...

Advertising or PR - which is the best way to raise your business profile?

In todays challenging times it can be tempting to resort to spending money on advertising to try and attract new business and raise your profile. The challenge with using advertising is that there is no guarantee that you will get a return on your investment in advertising. Even when your advert is printed potential clients know that this has been paid for by you and although you may raise your visibility there is no guarantee that you are raising your credibility at the same time.

What if there was a way that you could also raise your credibility without spending money on advertising.

Well, the secret is to become good at doing your own PR.

What does that involve? Well the first step is to be really clear on what your core message is. What image do you want to put across to all your "publics" - suppliers , customers, staff and anyone else that you come into contact with. Make sure that you are congruent in always putting that core message across consistently.

The next important step is putting together a press release , ideally from a human interest angle with a newsworthy story that will grab the attention of the media you are approaching. If they like what you have to say then you maybe able to get some free press coverage written/broadcast by a third party which gives a lot more credibility than an advertisement.

The next step is to decide what type of media you wish to approach and make sure you get names, email addresses and contact numbers and contact those organisations directly with your press release

While there are no guarantees that you will get coverage straight away, doing your own PR is a skill that can be learned which will also enable you to build media contacts and in the long term build your credibility and visibility.

PR is very hit and miss, I think it either has very little (zero) impact or just occasionally it has a HUGE impact. But most of the time it has zero.

Advertising is more easy to measure, particularly online, and tends to have more assured results.

I tend to agree with you Tim. PR can also backfire, advertising more rarely so.

It really depends. Often a mix of both is needed.

There's a balance between sales, awareness and brand / positioning (see youtube links at www.clickok.org ) and that'll depend on your business.

Don't forget, PR is talked-up by expensive agencies that essentially trade a tangible (money) for an intangible (the possibilities of an article appearing in a national paper etc). It is expensive and requires consistency, which all work in favour of the agencies.

The right media attention will make you rich. Advertising will pay the bills and butter the bread until that big media break comes along.
