I am interested to hear of business owners who have implemented alternatives to redundancy in their firms. What ideas they came up with and how they went about selling them to their employees.

Thanks

Tim

I think some obvious ideas are:

- Reducing working hours, or the number of days worked per week

- Asking people to take a salary cut across the board and therefore being able to keep them on rather than having to make some people redundant

- Getting rid of bonuses and again using the saved bonus money to ensure that people don't have to be got rid of

I've certainly seen a few examples of all three in the various media over the past few months. Although it's difficult to say anything else to the TV when you have a microphone in front of your face, it does seem that with full disclosure of what is going on and the board/management leading by example and taking the hit themselves then most people accept the situation. Communication with all stakeholders seems to be the key.
