Hi there!!

I own a profitable business, but with the electricity price hikes every now and then, I am a bit worried. Are there any more price hikes expected?

Hello Ryder

I have just literally posted an offer of a free utility and telephony audit for home and business users within the Services Offered section.

If you would like to get in touch (click on my name and contact details are there), I wil see what I can do advise and help.

Excellent timing in my book.

Laurence

There is some law that stakes "anything that can go up in price, will go up in price", can't remember the name of it but it seems very apt!

Hi there,

You're right to be concerned simply because of the unpredictable nature of the electricity marketplace and all you need is to power your business with affordable electricity, not worry about the wholesale market!

Although you unfortunately can't control the market, there are a few things you can do to ensure you're making the most of the savings avaialable and into the future!

1. Electricity4business offers an electricity4businesses 'Even 12 budget plan' which ensures that you bills stay equal throughout the course of the year. Meaning that you'll have greater control of your businesses cash-flow.

2. Shop around for the best deal on your electricity - don't be afraid to shop around for the best tariff out there to suit your business.

3. And last but not least...The best advice long-term to make the most consistent savings would be to be clever with the way your business uses its electricity. You don't have to spend thousands on energy efficient equipment, just be smart about the way you use the electricity your business pays for. Remember use less - pay less, simple as that!

visit electricity4business.co.uk for more information including free downloadable guides to help you and your business to be more energy efficient!

You make a good point Chris. The Bank of England rate cut announced on the 7th December will not make a blind bit of difference to business borrowers. In fact the effect of this and any other cuts is going to make a bad situation worse as the article below explains.

The rise in the cost of electricity is going to be the least of our problems in 2008.

Interesting reading there Joe...

What are going to be the main problems in 2008?

The first problem is that the governor of the Bank of England has shown that his 'independence' was a sham when he caved in to Gordon Brown and his poodle Chancellor, Alistair Darling by dumping £40 Billion of our cash into Northern Rock. This does not bode well for the Bank acting responsibly in a difficult year ahead. Also four of the nine MPC members who decide base rates were appointed by Gordon Brown when he was Chancellor.

Cutting rates further in 2008, in the interests of political expediency is very much a possibility therefore. This in my view will expose the value of the pound. The days where our considerable manufacturing industry could feast on devaluation and bear a bigger burden of the economy as a result are long gone (mostly to China) and it has been capital cashflows that have bridged the huge gap between what we earn in foreign currency and what we spend. With the onset of the credit crunch the long term cashflows for mergers and acquisitions for example will be largely absent next year. Therefore it's going to be the short term 'hot' money that will have to take the strain.

However with the pound falling against the Europeans in particular (9% since January), where it has already been made clear that they won't hesitate to raise Euro interest rates next year to combat inflation, the hot money won't hang around for long. When that happens the implications here for the pound, inflation and ultimately irresistible upward pressure on interest rates will become serious. This is exactly what we got in the 1970's. The article below refers to this period:
