120 Applicants for Every Job...

I read in the newspaper this morning the fairly sobering fact that it is estimated that there are now 120 applicants for every job in the UK.

Some good jobs are getting over 300 applicants, which is absolutely crazy!

I think the downside of it being so 'easy' to apply for a job now - as in once your CV is written you just go to an online job site, find every job that matches what you are after and click 'apply' is that it can mean that genuinely good candidates and their CVs can get lost in the noise.

It must also be a nuisance for recruiters having to go through so many CVs just to find a list of people that they want to interview, and also disheartening for those that do apply seeing that 100 people have already applied also.

Let's hope it doesn't continue for too much longer since it isn't good for recruiter or recruitee when there are so many people applying for every role.

Hi Sasha

That sounds about right - anecdotally I know from a couple of friends that have been looking on online job sites recently for jobs to apply to that there are quite frequently over 100 responses to an advert.

I guess this is pretty daunting and even disheartening, however it is so easy to apply online, compared to filling in a four page application for instance, that these numbers may actually be a bit inflated in the sense that some just indiscriminately apply for everything they can see!

... if the public sector gets chopped after the election as rumours are saying (whichever party gets in, if any!) then that number could easily go up to even more.

On the positive side companies might be able to pick up overqualified staff who will excel at the job for a bargain rate as they'll just want a job - trying to put a positive spin on the current financial mess
