Best way to create PDFs for free?...

Just looking for recommendations on the best tool for creating PDFs (for free).

Used to use Adobe Acrobat at uni but didn't have to pay for the license then(!) which is pretty expensive.

Any ideas for a good free PC one?

Thanks!

Simon

Theres a lot out there, they tend to mainly be in ghost format, so when you goto print the document you can send the document to the PDF ghost program which then allows you to print the file to a pdf file on your computer

Here is an example:

You could try Primo PDF.

There are loads of free PDF creator tools out there, just search on google.

Some of them give more consistent results than others...

If you need an alternative to MS Office to create text docs or spreadsheets and then pdf them, then try OpenOffice which has a "save to pdf" function and is free to download www.openoffice.org ).

If you need a Mac version, go with NeoOffice www.neooffice.org ).

Yes - agree OpenOffice is one way of doing it, though if you are just looking for a quick utility to 'print to' then Primo PDF will do the job fine as Tim says.

One thing to note is some of the free tools don't convert hyperlinks correctly, so if you really want to be sure to get the conversion right may be worth asking a friend with Acrobat to do it for you!

I think on a Mac you can create PDFs by default!

Incidentally if you want to create PDFs dynamically for free, e.g. from user entered data, then you can use free packages like fpdf with php.

Cheers

FPDF is used here to create the PDFs of the articles, out of interest.

And one more excellent free PDF creator I came across today is Cute PDF. Quite a good list here now!

Two other free PDF creators are PDF995 and Foxit Reader. PDF995 does have advertising in it though so for each PDF you create you have to click through an advert. Annoying but then the software is free to download and install.
