Blogs - Do you have a blog?...

I have just started a blog a week ago and it is great but hard work as well. It is like standing on a treadmill that needs regular and compelling updates. I know that is probably a slow burn method to raise awareness of my company, so I will be patient.

Just wanted to know if anybody else has a blog and can offer more advice.

I've read many articles by online marketing 'gurus' over the last couple of years saying it is crucial that every business must have a blog.

The important point to note is that, whilst a blog can certainly help, it is only worth considering if you actually have something real and valid to communicate. Not only that, you need ideas for how to maintain and keep the blog going over time. Brainstorming around 20 posts or topics you can blog about related to your business / subject at a time can give you direction and help you focus on what you want to communicate rather than create an incoherent set of posts that does not attract much interest.

The other point to note is that it is really hard work, as you mention Binh - not for the faint hearted!

However I know of many success stories including business acquaintances that have actively gained business through their blog - so if you create quality content, in time people will come - and this may well be a fruitful source of lead generation and result in business being done.

Completely agree Dan - too many blogs out there are there purely for the sake of it and have no real purpose. Sadly you have to read about twenty useless blogs for one good one!

I used to have a blog about freebies, but it took a lot of effort to maintain, there were other sites doing basically the same thing - and there was no way to make any money from it!

A blog is only worth it if:
- you have a real interest in the subject (Say a hobby) OR
- it is a business blog and you are able to convert visits into some leads

What do people blog about, or how do you work out what to write?

I think I would sit down and think "right let's write a blog", but then I would not have the faintest idea what to actually write about!

I have had a blog since February, and it is yes definitely very hard work keeping it up but it's very much increased the traffic to my website since around May, which was my intention.

I am totally addicted to my business coaching blog at http://businesscoaching.typepad.com and was amazed at how quickly it was picked up my Google from the start and how much traffic comes my way.

What i don't understand though is why Google is outpulling Yahoo by a rate of about 95:1 as the last time I checked, I was ranked number 1 in Google.com for business coaching blog and number 2 for Yahoo.com so it's not as if they don't know about the blog.

I can't believe that Google now dominates the market to that extent.
