What are peoples opinions in businesses and specifically having a mentor when you start a small business.

Is there any evidence that those who have some sort of business mentor do any better and that their busines runs longer than those who have noone in a mentoring role.

And also how do you go about finding a mentor - should it be someone who is experienced in business generally or specifically someone who is actually in the industry that you are setting up in... and how closely with the business should they be involved, at the level of investing or having a stake or should they always be independent (and if so should they be paid or do it out of the goodness of their heart?)

Interesting to hear peoples thoughts on business mentoring.
