Choosing your web browser: did you get this?...

When I switched on my computer today I had an anonymous looking pop up window that asked me if I wanted to change my web browser.

I thought that this was some sort of spammy thing or something else dodgy on my computer so closed it down and ran the virus checker.

But then from a couple of google searches I think this might have been something legitimate to do with europe... does anyone know if that's true and did anyone else get the message asking them if they wanted to switch browsers?

Yes.

I guess it was deliberately vague so that most people thought it was spam or a virus or similar and closed it without changing their browser

Yes I also received that last week, and I only knew what it was because of having read about this antitrust case with the European Union a few months ago and thought it must be related to that.

It was quite confusing though and had I not known about it the first thing I would have done is close it instantly and then run the virus checker!

Yes, it's a new directive enforced by the EU on Microsoft because they lost that case.

Why is it though that Microsoft have to let you choose another browser whilst for instance Apple seem to get away with forcing everyone to use their tools and software to make iphone apps?

The law is an ass, as they say, Lianne, and entirely inconsistent!
