Earning Money from Websites...

Does anyone here use Adsense, and if so do you find it a useful way of earning revenue from your websites?

It seems like it'd remove the hassle of trying to find people to advertise on fairly small sites, but would it bring a better income than say affiliate schemes and so on.

Would be interested to hear what methods people use to earn some pocket money or more(!) from their websites...

Hi Tim

A friend of mine runs a few websites that have Adsense on them. From my limited understanding, it is very quick and easy to set up which is a virtue and you can start earning straight away.

If you want significant earnings from it then you need to get very large numbers of visitors to a site, but it can still provide useful pocket money, as you say, at lower traffic levels. Saves the hassle of trying to get companies to advertise on the site yourself

It is easy to use but predominately you will get much lower revenue than a decent targeted affiliate scheme.

I used to run a site on insurance giving free advice... google would give me £1 or so per click for adverts where as affiliates are currently giving up to £120 per sale so as long as their conversion rate is better than 1:120 I am getting much better income.

Affiliate schemes sound potentially better, but the big caveat is finding a reliable one that will actually pay out and you are confident will tell you of any sales you get. I've heard of quite a few people who have been burnt through affiliate schemes by conditions and payments changing, or simply never being received, or referrals getting 'lost' somewhere and therefore not credited...

Affiliate programmes giving referrals of up to 120 per sale? That's seem very, and impressively, high... where do you find such affiliate programmes from...

The main problem with affiliate programes and adsense is:

1. In reality an average web site can earn around 50p per day
2. The use of adsense/affiliates totally de-values a website, especially when it is used on a homepage.
3. Driving traffic to a website is a difficult process, why on earth would you then tempt a visitor to leave via adsense, for 2p?

I believe that except for a very select group of clever webmasters, the use of adsense and affiliate programmes is a complete waste of time.

Thanks for your comments on this. I was considering adding Google Adsense to my website when I finish the new version but based on what I've read here I might give it a miss.
