Ecommerce and security: do you always look?...

Just doing a bit of (largely anecdotal) research on ecommerce and security, would be really useful to get people's thoughts on these questions:

- do you feel more or less secure than you used to online?

- have you ever stopped performing an ecommerce transaction because you felt something was up with the site, rather than changing your mind over the product?

- do you always check the website says https:// and that the secure padlock icon appears in the browser?

Many thanks

Dan

Hi Dan

I always look to see if the padlock is there - occasionally I notice that it's not there, and in which case I don't fill in the forms.

As for the https I have to say I don't look for that, but if the padlock is there that's enough, isn't it?

I think the internet is probably as secure as it has been for ages, but people's perception is that they trust sites more now with regard to ecommerce than in the past...

Certainly I can't think of anyone I know off hand who wouldn't buy online know through fear of fraud or something going wrong whereas a few years back several people were more wary of it.

Hi Dan, yep I agree. I do feel a bit safer on line and I ALWAYS look for the https AND the padlock just in case! If it aint there I dont fill any personal details in. I also think that credit card comapnies have improved their servces when it comes tospotting unusual activity on a creditcard.

I agree, I think more people are comfortable buying online and know what to do than ever.

I was just filling in my details on a website that asked for name and address etc in order to send out a freebie and noticed it wasn't secure - are there any guidelines as to when a site has to be secure or not... is it just when collecting bank details or should anything other than name and email be secure?

It's interesting to read this but then I suspect everyone on these forums is more IT educated than the masses - whether people in general know to check for the padlock and so on is an interesting case in point...

I always look and I am absolutely outraged that the Nike online store has broken the convention... if you go to the checkout you'll notice there is no padlock and Verisign security insists that is still secure...

They even have a disclaimer saying "this site really is secure because..."

Why do they get to break conventions?
