Email Marketing Lists...

Just a quick question about marketing email lists... I don't have a requirement for one at the moment, but may come in useful with a business venture I'm mulling over.

My question is whether it is legal to mailshot a list that you purchase, if they are companies vs individuals?

I believe there is a legal difference between sending emails to companies and individuals. With individuals it is illegal to mailshot those who have not opted in to a list. With businesses things are different and apparently you do not even need to remove them from your list even if they ask - though of course it would be good sense as they are hardly going to buy from you if they don't want what you are offering!

Always, always make sure you use a legitimate opt in list when you are emailing individuals.

Yes, whilst it is not actually illegal to indiscriminately mail companies in the way it is individuals, it is obviously not good practice - so take the time to get a well qualified list. Also make sure it is as recent as possible!

The general advice I would give is to be very specific in what you request when looking for such data.

Make sure that the list has been opted into, verify how the addresses were collected, and ensure that it is also very recent and the addresses are those in your target market. I imagine it's quite a tricky thing to get a high quality list, but it may be worth paying more to get good quality data.
