Start by reading everything you can on the topic, about a 100 websites, and take notes on the methods they recommend.

That will be a good start, then have a good idea of something worth marketing and work hard at it for a few years!

I agree with thomas - there are so many different slants you could take on marketing your website. You have to believe in your product - and most importantly - know everything about it, that way you know what people who are looking for the site will be after / looking for and what kind of marketing approach will hit them.
