Increase conversion?...

Hi there.

At the moment my business is looking at ways of increasing online conversion on our site:

http://www.europeantenders.com

We get a lot of traffic to the site, and a we get a number of people who get to the point of almost paying but then they abandon.

I wanted to ask if anyone on the forum would have a look at the site and perhaps make suggestions on what would make it better or would encourage people to complete their transaction? An outside view is always better!!

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Emma

Hi Emma,

What sort of conversion rate do you currently have? It is quite usual (sadly) for around 50% of people to drop off at each stage of a fulfilment process. Even at the final stage of just clicking 'make payment' when it appears the customer is fully bought in to the process, there can still be a surprisingly high drop off rate.

If the drop off rate is uniform at each stage of your process, then that could just be the normal attrition rate for your particular business. If there is one step where the drop off is particularly high, then it almost certainly points to something at that particular step that is putting people off and, if rectified, could lead to a nice boost in business.

Also worth looking at what percentage of your traffic is from the UK. I often find a surprising number of visitors to many client websites from outside Europe, and particularly in your case given it's people looking for European tenders any traffic from outside is never going to lead to a conversion!

Use a newsletter on your website that people can sign up to for offers and so on - if you get good levels of traffic it might be a way of, in time, starting to convert more people.

At the very least you can ask those interested people for valuable feedback on your site.

Perhaps you could make it slightly clearer what your site offers and what the benefits are from the homepage?

It sounds like the target audience of this site - those who run or are interested in running a business in the UK - might find your content interesting, I'm sure many of them would like information on government contracts and the like that are put out to tender.

Perhaps you could either advertise here or do some sort of mutually beneficial arrangement (e.g. they offer access to your database for a cut of the profits or similar). That may not be viable, but you could look at joint ventures with this and any other business-type site that may help to raise awareness and in the process increase your conversions.

Offer people, say, one days free access to the site and then get them onto a subscription or at least your newsletter afterwards.

Hi everyone,

Thank you very much for your advice and comments. We are going to look at a site redesign, and creating new content for the homepage that push the benefits of the service a little more and just cut to the chase about what it is we're offering.

We're getting a lot of traffic through to the homepage, but they generally aren't getting that much further so we need to do something about that before we move onto each step of the process down the line.

I'll post again once we've amended the site and added more things to keep people there I will let you know if it makes a difference and open the site up for review again

Thanks for all your ideas,

Emma

Look forward to hearing in due course Emma - it's nice when people respond to the feedback and ideas given here and will be interesting to see what comes next

Would tender information be of interest to members on here, could a club help to get people interested or drive more traffic with regular 'how to' posts about tenders, European tender processes and so on perhaps... just an idea!

Yes, it's the copy that needs to be revised right now...not saying that our is best, but after a very simple redesign and rewrite we have much better conversion rate and lesser bounce. One hint - for usability reasons make the fonts bigger. It works miracles !
