Is viral marketing a solid strategy to drive traffic to a site though?

Very true Chris the viral affect on advertising is useful in certain circumstances but not others. An example where viral advertising could be useful is businesses like; web design services, holiday accomodation, unique websites offering cost cutting services and a local good quality garage. These are just a few examples where word of mouth could benefit a business. I do agree with Chris's point that a boring on run of the mill business will not really benefit from viral marketing.

Page rank used to be a big thing in the past, now it is just a general indicator, however still useful if you want to get a rough idea of a site, as in how big it is and mainly how many links it has, a site with a PR of 5 or more is generally well linked or has one or two links from very high PR sites

I have talked to several people about how to increase web site traffic and one of the points raised is that by having a range of topics covered other sites from a variety of sources will reference your material.

Yes, it is relevant. However, where your website appears on search results will also depend on which keywords you type in search engine.

As Matt Cutts from Google says, content is the most important ingredient - he rates it before external links. I suppose it's a chicken and egg situation, as we all know the central plank of Google's algorithm since they began was the number and quality of external links coming into a website.

Using a Keyword Rich Title - This is a carefully researched term or key phrase people would search for in the search engines that would lead to your website. Generally, you would not use the name of your business unless it happens to be an effective keyword for your topic.

Submiting your site to Google is not necessary, as long as you have good content on your site relevent to what people are searching for then Google will have no problem finding it in time.
