Increasing website traffic...

By: Tim Briggs [10-October-06 2:39PM]

This is my first post, so hope you find it useful! I'd like to share some simple ways that you can use to help build traffic to your web site.

The first tip is the obvious one, but many people do not do it! That is to submit the site to search engines on the web, and in particular Google.

On the Google home page there is a link you can follow called 'About Google' and from the page that comes up a link called 'Submitting Your Site' which you can click to then list your site on Google... it will then crawl your site and in time add it to the index.

Tim

There are also many other search engines that it is useful to submit to, and many of them have free submission processes. It is well worth spending a few hours once your site is first created.

Of course, if you can get links through to your site then the search engines will find your sites in time naturally.

Patience is also important these days in having your site indexed, particularly with so many web sites out there!

Another way of driving traffic to your site is online viral marketing:

1) Have a web movie produced for your business.
2) Upload it to Youtube or a similar online movie portal
3) Include a link to your website

For those interested in the movie's content, it'll most likely draw them towards your website. Host some movies on your website itself and you'll draw them in even further!!

Is viral marketing a solid strategy to drive traffic to a site though?

It probably depends on industry again - perhaps it works with music or advertising and other media based 'cool' industries, but I've not heard of any viral campaigns that work for your run of the mill boring company?

Very true Chris the viral affect on advertising is useful in certain circumstances but not others. An example where viral advertising could be useful is businesses like; web design services, holiday accomodation, unique websites offering cost cutting services and a local good quality garage. These are just a few examples where word of mouth could benefit a business. I do agree with Chris's point that a boring on run of the mill business will not really benefit from viral marketing.

Of course the flip side is the viral affect can be negative for a business if the business is second rate.

PR = Page ranking Sasha, if you downlod the Google toolbar you will see a little green bar, this is suppose to be google method of measuring the strength of a web page.

Page rank used to be a big thing in the past, now it is just a general indicator, however still useful if you want to get a rough idea of a site, as in how big it is and mainly how many links it has, a site with a PR of 5 or more is generally well linked or has one or two links from very high PR sites

Does anyone make money off YouTube... I mean in terms of individuals that post their videos up onto the site?

Hi honesty4u

Just looked at your website and it asks for a language pack to be downloaded and installed... this may well put people off visiting your english site, may be worth looking into.

Cheers

I have talked to several people about how to increase web site traffic and one of the points raised is that by having a range of topics covered other sites from a variety of sources will reference your material.

The focus of some sites is clearly the home page with subsidiary pages regurgitating similar themes and content.

By exploring a given subject area from a range of views, can result in it featuring well for non mainstream search queries and thereby attract more visitors.

Hello all,
I have been submitting my websites and shops over the last 9 years or so with software called Addweb, I started with Ver 4 and run ver 8 pro over the last 14 months.
Apart from auto sending your pages to search engines, you can view as to where your site is listed on any engine eg:page 4 or 1177, and if it is not on page 1 you can get it up to page 1 within days with no tears.
For eg to find my shop web site, you do not now have to type the extra bits like the co.uk you can just type Alternative4u and you will see it mostly on page 1 of most search engines, if not up top it only drops to 6th or 7th place on page 1.
Good luck folks.

Hi David

Interesting stuff, thanks for that.

What are the main things people search for to reach you - presumably very few search for Alternative4u (unless they have already heard of you, in which case the search engine part isn't really needed!)

My regards to the members, all of us now that to make a site popular we need to have good content in them. But, there are many techniques that can be employed to get the sites up and running. SEO techniques play an important role in getting the job done.

Hello, thanks for msg re how do people search for us.
Well I have put html into the site so that people can find us by entering in the search things like>> Health & beauty care shop> health shop> certain other departments names that sell our products (by the way some very large shop website builders have used Alternative4u in their html pages, yes it did shock me to find that out.
Cheers, take care,

Thanks for the information on pagerank - is this important... is there a link between pagerank and where a site appears in a search engine or not really?

Yes, it is relevant. However, where your website appears on search results will also depend on which keywords you type in search engine.

I have seen some website reviews on here before, of course whether they are by "experts" or not who will give good advice is another matter
