Is Flash on the way out?...By: Tim Briggs [2-May-10 4:50PM]819 posts
With Apple not supporting Flash, and with HTML 5 coming in and more and more Flash effects being achievable with things like JQuery, is it the beginning of the end for Flash?

Flash would seem to be here to stay, aren't all youtube videos delivered through Flash video for instance

In all honesty no. HTMl5 won't be fully accessible till 2022. IE6 has taken 6 years to shuffle out of the web browser world and is still holding a decent percentage. Will be years before Flash starts to fade away.

Lisa, thats actually a common misconception about HTML5, The standard won't be finalized until 2022 but you can already begin using elements now. It will be supported in all major browsers by the end of 2011, but I appreciate where your coming from. Also youtube is delivering video in HTML5 as well.

Having a few flash features on a website is fine - too many and it blocks search engines from spidering your site so, flash is always best used sparingly in SEO terms.

I can't imagine that Flash is on the way out: I believe that most online television material uses Flash to deliver it to the user (such as IPlayer etc)? Not to mention YouTube.

Yes, it will fade away but slowly within some 5-10 years from now while the other technologies replace it. But - don't worry, such things don't come overnight.

This is a difficult question to answer, it is very hard to predict the future with regard to technology (or anything else for that matter).

Companies like Apple are trying to get rid of flash, I think it will fade away unless a big company like Google Microsoft or Apple end up buying it out.

Well Abode were silly to battle with Apple about having flash on their products for more money as now developers will start to develop altenatives

I heard the only reason Apple decided not to like Flash was because Flash slows down Apple handheld devices. As I know nothing about technology (well little anyway!) whether that is true or not I have no idea.

I heard Adobe got greedy and wanted more money from Apple so apple turned them down.
