Is the credit crunch affecting ecommerce?...

With all this talk of a credit crunch in the newspapers I wondered if it is actually affecting online sales?

As far as I can tell restaurants and shopping centres are as full as ever which makes me wonder if all this credit crunch isn't in the main just talked up by the newspapers to write easy stories and sell copies.

Interested to see if it has actually affected anyones online sales

Chris

Hi Chris,

I too hear and see a lot of news reports concerning the so called credit crunch but have yet to witness any real evidence of it.

I think there is quite a bit of sensationalism that accompanies the failure of a bank or building society and this is exacerbated even more on a slow news day.

We have yet to feel the effects on our business and from others we know of, they are too.

The days of the 1970’s and 80’s boom and bust have been replaced by more moderate economic policies that would limit the chances or wholesale melt down happening again.

Let us hope I am right.

Hello,
Well only last wednesday morning I decided to take a tour around a few stalls on the Great Yarmouth market, and I spoke to a number of stall holders, they are a great friendly lot and made me most welcome.
However one thing that all told me was that they are finding that people are turning away from the non essential items in a big way since the start of July. And Yarmouth being a seaside town full of holiday makers now, it was not hard to see that they simply are only buying foods, meals, not toys, gifts etc as they would be in the other years.
It was worth going to the market, seeing whats going on for myself, as yes some folks are spending more by being on the market than they are taking home with them at night.
I think Market stall rent is far too costly for them, and paying out £50 before you sell anything is not good if you need to make profits in what is a down-turn market.

I read an article somewhere, online retail sale increases despite there is a decrease of high street retailer.
I think with credit crunch biting, most peoples are looking around to look for bargain which is online give them one of the main source. Also, I think currently credit crunch are more affected towards the lower class level not yet up to the upper class.

I think it is actually helping on line sales at the moment because people are staying home and not getting the car out.

In my humble opinion the Credit Crunch, or Economical slowdown which is more accurate for the man on the street, has affected all non essential purchases to varying degrees.

People are buying less on some items but I have also witnessed home improvement suppliers being busier than ever......maybe thats because people arne;t moving, not going out and need something to do at the weekend !!!

A couple of my friends have online sites and say that so far, they are not losing any business compared to this time last year, though it's not gone up either!

This is an interesting question...

the thing I find most confusing is you read conflicting reports depending which paper you pick up and which journalist is writing, some say the downturn has hit online a lot whilst others say online is continuing to grow!

Very odd

I am sure it depends what sector you are in, though. We are finding people are dining at home more at the moment and so it has not affected us.

I think the hope for online retail is that more people will become price-sensitive and go to the web (particularly price comparison engines) to buy, rather than the high-street.

It could bring people onto the web who have avoided it before of security concerns or lack of familiarity with computers. Fingers crossed!

Good to see that most people with online ecommerce sites don't appear to be particularly affected... so far at least!

My conversion rate on my website has cut in halve since the economy slumped.
It seems very obvious for me that it is definatly effecting the merchandise I sell.
