Depends on what your needs are and then there's always the problem of a laptop being nicked more than a desktop.

It's certainly true that laptops use an awful lot less energy than a standalone machine, but that said you will also need to pay more to get a laptop with the same speed and performance as a good desktop machine, so if you are running programs that are speed dependent, then that is something to also consider when choosing not to mention the practicality of the set-up itself - for instance if you need a large screen for graphic work etc then may as well use a desktop.

Good point about using a laptop and saving energy - that said if you are going to use it as a main machine it is worth getting a docking station and using a proper keyboard so as to make it more comfortable for day to day use.

Laptops are great, but I always prefer to work from a desktop in the office for the reason outlined above - a lot more comfortable to use with a large monitor on the desk and with a larger keyboard, and also they do tend to be quicker than a laptop of the equivalent price.

Computers are so cheap these days that you could even consider getting both which means that you get the best of both worlds!

Desktops are much heavier duty machines, and easily upgraded and repaired as years go by. Laptops are not.
