LinkedIn for business...

Is linkedin good for business?

I don't really get it - you create a profile and write a little about you and then what... wait for people to contact you, or look them up?

Answering questions - is it worth it?

Have people made any useful connections through the site...

Stephen

I started using Linedin about six months ago and have made a few good contacts through it. I would not say it is the best community website but it can work if you give it enough time.

It is not the most intuitive site to use; ironically it gets better the more contacts you have. When you first join you think 'what now then?' - surprised they haven't worked on that. But hey they have millions of members so must be doing something right!

Hi Stephen

Apparently a good place to increase your exposure there is through answering questions related to your expertise.

It can also be useful to get in touch with former colleagues etc on the site and this may perhaps lead to work referrals or useful business networking meetings for you.

These places are all about reputation and network building, they do work if you put the hours in

Not used linkedin yet, had a quick look but wasn't immediately obvious how it would be of use. I think sites have to grab you in the first few seconds these days or else you're gone!

I have 'got' most business networking sites, forums etc fairly quickly - but never got the hang of linked-in.

It seems to be a place to show off how many people in business you know but with quite superficial connections and it looks like the site works better the more connections you have, the inverse of being attractive to someone who joins the site who is always going to have none!

I now tend to only link with people who show their contacts on linkedIn, whats the point of having contacts and hiding them? but do not really use it that much as people are only interested in linking for the sake of it rather than as a business contact either now or maybe in the future.
