Hi

I am currently looking to start up a business and have been told that I require a business plan. I was wondering whether anyone can help me by telling me what I should be looking for from business planning agents, ie what services they should be offering ie do i want 1/2 or more meetings? in person or on the phone etc. also should i be expected to carry out all the market research? Also what sort of price I should be paying.

Thanks

In response to your questions above.

If you want to reduce your spending on obtaining a professional business plan developer I would advise that you conduct the research into your business; as this information will contribute to the development of the plan.

I would also recommend that you sign Confidentiality Agreements as to protect your concept.

Costs can vary, I have written business plans that have been specifically steered towards raising investment.

If there is anything else I can assist you on - please let me know.

All the best.

Sites such as James Caan's (Dragon's Den) Entrepreneur Application show you what criteria you need to add to your business plan:

Yes a business plan is definitely a good idea when starting a business. A good business plan won't of itself make a good business but the process of going through its creation can bring to light many important questions that are best considered sooner rather than later.

Also if your business will need financial investment from outside then any investor will want to see your business plan as part of the consideration process.

Also, don't forget, that a business plan has a variety of functions. Often, initially, investors just want a basic idea and then want more detail if they're interested.

What you present to an angel investor will be different to what a bank manager requires.

You need to know the plan inside out in your own head in order to be able to answer lots of questions to various groups and potential stakeholders; but never send a detailed plan to anyone in the first instance.

Hi,

Business plans are vital to starting up a company; it would make sense for you to carry out your own business plan, rather than getting someone else to do it for you. You need to know you business plan inside and out in order to know what your business is and how will it operate. There are local Government agencies that can help you, just Google it within your local area. As regards to market research, if your business is a niche company would be best to carry it out yourself as secondary market research may not be relevant to you and can be expensive.
