Hi, I have started up a web design company and i want to know the best way to market my company. I have no client database but am interested in the possibility of email marketing. Does anyone have any advice based on experience? The budget is tight so please help!

Hi Sally

Starting a web design business is tough going because there are so many providers of web design services out there, which are of good and bad quality of course.

One of the best methods is to do what you are doing and to post in forums like this one. If you can find people who are asking questions related to their website and how to do something it may well be that something crops up naturally that you can help with.

Getting the first site in your portfolio can be the hardest so suggest offering lower prices for the first site or two just to get them done.

Using online and social networking cleverly at the start to help get those first few leads for your services can be hard but once done can create a steady stream of leads and business down the line.

You could try buying the list of new businesses that start up and emailing them to see if they want a website. Could be a useful source of potentially warm leads.

I can't comment on buying lists for email marketing, but I imagine you would need to source it carefully to ensure that the addresses are both those of people who are happy to receive marketing emails, and that the list is full of live addresses.

Lists cost money and are no guarantee. Social media has taken over now. Set up blogs, twitter, facebook profiles where your website will be exposed on SEO's if you regularly update and use your keywords. There needs to be a sustained attack. Also do some websites for friends and family to start up your portfolio and to get endorsements and recommendations.

Hi Tim

As a marketing guru, you know as well as I do that there are multiple benefits to 'follow' and 'no-follow' links ;-)

I'm sure Dan will also turn them back on when the spammers give it a rest.

A lot of good advice already posted, I'd agree that social media can be really beneficial. Have you considered running a blog? This would allow you to discuss your work in more depth and go through some of the concepts that you have applied that set you apart from your competitors.

One of the most useful things to do is to start building an email list of prospects. Start right now by creating a prospects database with everyone you know who runs a business or would benefit from having a website.

Write a guide like 'How to choose a web design firm' and allow anyone to download it off your website, and of course collect their email address.

Mail out regular newsletters to your prospects.

Re the second post- if you haven’t got any orders coming in and want a big database of potential clients then find a list of businesses and spend a few hours each day going on their websites and copy and paste all details into a spreadsheet

One of the good ways to get noticed is by publishing some press releases online. There are a large number of free press release websites that allow you to publish your press release and this will then generate your message getting out there.
