Hi there

Yes, this site does need SEO work as you say.

You need to be a lot more focused with your content, and rather than covering a lot on a chaotic page like the homepage, focus in on one element on each page and target your tags and content around that.

This will also help the human work out what is what too and get them to explore the site more, the homepage is a little overwhelming and it is not immediately clear what is going on.

There are lots of companies out there that offer SEO services. When you are looking to employ such a company therefore it can be hard to work out if you will get results, or if your money is going down the drain.

The single best thing to do is to look at some of their client sites (if they don't have a client portfolio on their site avoid like the plague), and then do some searches on related phrases: if they come up well, then it looks good. If you can't find them for what their key phrases are, then avoid.

Is it SEO you want or advertising? Many site owners mistake one for the other - it is possible to promote a site and generate business without waiting for it to achieve pagerank.

That's true, you could always pay for something like AdWords for short term exposure for your site whilst you wait to achieve good rankings through the standard listings.
