Having a credit card is not bad, but you must know your limitations on using it. Don't just depends on it or else you will be buried with dept.

A couple of the banks have started offering a free credit check service on customers (usually with limits imposed and a charge after a while).

If you are doing any sizeable piece of business it would definitely make sense to credit check the customer first to give you an idea of who you are dealing with... that way if you do fear something is up you can ask for a percentage payment up front to give you some security at least.
