Podcasting...

Like myspace and youtube, podcasting is one of those words which has quickly entered modern vocabulary, but does anyone actually do it? I know plenty of people who blog, and who post videos on youtube, but none who have their own podcast.

So who are the podcasters and where do they lurk? What are their podcasts like - do they record them for business or personal purposes? Can a company market itself via podcasting like it can with e-mails and web movies, or is podcasting firmly rooted in recreational soil? Do any of you out there keep a podcast for business or pleasure purposes?

Cheers,

Dan

All very interesting questions.

We've all read about Podcasting on forums, networking sites and in the media for quite some time now!

I do know a couple of people who use podcasting on their blogs or company sites for a couple of reasons. The main reason is, of course, self-promotion: record a podcast on, for instance, how to manage your finances and post it on your site and submit to all the podcasting directories and therefore get your thoughts and your brand in front of people who otherwise might not hear about you.

It also seems to be sticky content and encourages people to come back a few months later to see what else is on offer.

I don't imagine you are going to be capable of reaching as large an audience through Podcasting as other traditional methods, but I have read that many who use it feel that those who do listen to the podcast are 'warm leads' and more likely to turn into customers than those acquired through other methods.

Never used a podcast myself... have you?

Hi Dan, thanks for the feedback.

I've never used one myself, although I keep a blog for both myself and the business. I suppose podcasting is the next generation of blogging, although it depends on people having the regular content to make it worthwhile. It's one thing starting it up, but if you start to develop some kind of audience (however large or small) you have to keep the momentum going - especially if it's for your business.

I'm doing the research because it's an area we're thinking of exploring. We're starting to turn our blog at http://www.myspace.com/seraphimpictures towards the more technical kind of things, and hopefully inspiring people to communicate their thoughts on podcasting as well as promotional movies. Both are potentially good methods of advertising, yet they work in different ways. I don't know much about podcasting, so I'm keen to hear more about how and why people use them!

Cheers,

Dan

Hi Dan

I tend to agree; quite a lot of people do a podcast as an experiment and either get disillusioned when they get no traffic, or if they do get traffic suddenly feel under pressure to spend the time and energy creating more valuable podcasts which can be an effort!

I guess that sort of content would fit well particularly with a site like yours; is there a term for a video podcast yet?

I've heard it called "vidcasting" "videocasting" and "webcasting" but I think people just make it up as they go along. It's kind of ironic that video has all but given way to DVD and yet words like "videomail" and "videocasting" are creeping into our vocabulary!

I don't know if you're interested, but for the last week I've been gathering people's opinions about podcasting on various different forums, and over the next few days will be blogging the results over on our webpage at www.myspace.com/seraphimpictures at the same time as researching putting together our own podcast...take a look if you're interested!

Cheers,

Dan

Thanks... just taken a look at the first couple of blog posts on this.

Is having a company MySpace site a good way of getting business / interest? I imagine it depends on the industry but anecdotally you hear stories of people getting leads from MySpace.

Do you have a website under your own domain name too? (Don't worry not fishing for business, just curious )

Podcasting is one of those things that has been talked about a lot in the press and thousands of articles have been written on it and how to use it for marketing.

But in reality it is unlikely to drive much traffic to your site, is harder to produce and more time consuming to produce than good quality written articles, and until it is as easy to create a podcast as it is to type text in a box like this I suspect it'll remain that way...

Hi Dan (Lyddon)

I would really recommend getting a proper company website done, rather than using a free MySpace one

Thanks for visiting the blog Dan - it's developing as the weeks go by, and we're due to launch our own Youtube channel next week. The 'proper' website has been a 'work-in-progress' for a long time now...

Long story short, when I started out as a freelance cameraman I didn't see I'd need one (word of mouth being the primary way of bringing in new biz) then it was put on the 'things to do' list when we went into partnership...and it still hasn't been done yet. We're in the process of re-branding, so you guessed it...it's lower down the list!!

As far as myspace is concerned, I think you're right in saying it's industry dependent - we've had a small amount of business from it, but as a way of generating interest I can't fault it. We sit snugly in the myspace film community (other communities are for music and comedy as well as the main social one) among companies similar to ourselves. According to the April 07 comscore/mediametrix UK panel, myspace is the UK's 4th most actively traffic site...as it grows in popularity, businesses could do no harm in setting up a free profile for themselves with a link to their 'proper' website

In terms of driving traffic to your site via podcasting, I think it all depends on how you advertise your podcast. There are plenty of directories to register it with, and if you put some elbow grease into generating interest via forums, you should see people coming to your site out of curiosity if anything else...make the podcast interesting enough, and your website welcoming enough, and who's to say they won't take a look around?

I wouldn't say that it's any harder to produce than a well-written article; the thought that goes into editing is entirely the same - it's the process of producing it that's different. Once you get used to it, I suspect it becomes a lot easier. One of the services we'll (eventually) be offering is podcast (and videocast) production, to take the hassle out of it for other people.

I would agree that a myspace profile can do no harm and possibly some good, though I know this was actually about podcasting

I have just started downloading some podcasts and listening to them on the way to work - quite good as you can close your eyes and sleep on the train whilst learn a thing or two of interest along the way

Podcasts are a great medium for a website as listening is much easier than reading large amounts of texts. If you are considering adding a podcast to your site remember to add the transcript as this will have great SEO benefit

I think podcasting is a really good idea. It will gain your compnay interest and credibility if they are good!
