Process of closing down a limited company...

Hopefully every company will succeed for ever, but of course in reality for a whole range of different reasons, and not necessarily due to failure, a company will need to wind up and stop operating.

What is the process with regard to winding up a limited company and what is the legal process that needs to be followed to ensure that everything is done correctly and that the company is wound up correctly.

Is there any advice on this or any online information perhaps somewhere on one of the many large government websites that goes through the process in more detail?

Or do most companies simply go into hibernation and stop trading as a going concern to save the process of having to wind up and deregister a company etc.
