I would suggest having the option to process any currency you think will be used by at least 5% of people who place orders on your site (unless each order is of high value, in which case you should offer as many as you possibly can!) | |

Just to add many open source ecommerce systems have the capability to list prices in a range of currencies too and even Paypal will take the three main currencies for you no problem, so there is little excuse not to be flexible! | |

If it's a UK site then, as long as your friend is happy to ship to Europe and America, I would suggest taking payments in Euros and Dollars in addition to pounds sterling. | |
