Reasons to write an e-book...

Having noticed the post here about book publishing and how to go about getting your work published, it made me think how many people these days do publish a book - either in physical form or as an e-book.

What are the reasons that many people now do this - what are the benefits of writing a book in any format?

Would be interested to read what thoughts people come up with on this!

I know this is resurrecting an old post, but has anyone here written an ebook recently and have any tips?

I'm thinking of writing an ebook with some recipes in it BUT think it's only worth it if I can differentiate it somehow from the thousands of (worthless) ebooks out there full of rubbish recipes that have been plucked from websites and written by people with no genuine cookery knowledge.

Thanks

Lianne

Hi Lianne

From what I have seen with ebooks, I think it all honestly comes down to the marketing more than the contents - just because until you buy an ebook you don't really know what's inside the cover. Therefore it's the marketing, the bit that makes you decide whether to download it or not, that really makes the sale.

Perhaps you could give away a recipe for free and have it as a unique, high quality, well described one with a picture - to show people that they will be getting a high quality product.

Of course motives differ for writing an ebook, but I think one of the reason is that it's a bit of a trendy/fashionable thing to do online these days!

People enjoy sharing their knowledge with others and probably find it a bit of a cathartic experience to pen down on paper everything they know on a topic.

I don't think getting huge sales and money is therefore the main reason most people write their own ebooks, though they are probably very optimistic about sales level it's pretty hard to derive much income from an ebook.

A genuine reason to publish an e-book could be for prospecting. For instance if it contains testimonials of high quality and distributed freely, it could be used to stimulate customers, prospects to buy your products and eventually join as an affiliate in your business. And more over it cost you nothing to distribute if you send it by e-mail
