SEO Question...

If your website is your business and you have no physical address other than for purposes of mail collection - does listing your address on every web page and then listing in all business directories improve your traffic in any way.

Thanks in advance

I can't see how listing an address could have any significant impact on website traffic... search engines index content on a site and then people search against the data and relevant results are returned

so unless someone searches for your address then i can't see it leading to more traffic?

Thanks Tim

The reason I asked is that I'd read that listing your business with all of the relevant business directories and things like google places and then having your business address on each page would make you come up more frequently in geotargeted searches. That seemed to make sense to me but I wondered if it would also have a negative, positive, or negligible affect on my global market potential if peeps used a geotargeted search and I lost out due to my address being located in another continent. I do after all want my website to reach a global market.

Listing your business address in the footer of a website is beneficial for numerous reasons.

1. It validates the business
2. Google likes to see an actual address, it helps them associate a website with a geographical location. (Not all sites are hosted in the right country and people seldom use Goggle's WMT's)
3. In terms of improving traffic, there will be a correlation between pleasing search engines and increased traffic but it will be very slim.
4. There are tons of places to build links, directories are just 1

Presumably a link needs to come from a page with pagerank to have benefit, or is that not the case?

Listing displaying your physical address would not increase the traffic to your website in itself.

Directory listings doesn't improve traffic. It can add up to your link building. You should use social media optimization for traffic generation.

Directory listings can improve traffic, but they have to be one of the 0.0001% of directories that are often used and valued still by other search engines. There are usually one or two massive directories per industry it is great to get into and also still some major generic listings that are taken seriously.

Other than that, they're not worth it.

It's very useful to add your business address to the bottom of every webpage in your site as it allows visitors to see that you're legitimate.

Listing your business presence on business directories is a good idea - as they tend to be relevant, as long as you list yourself in the most appropriate section, for example, if you own a shop you would list under "retail" or "online retail". As long as you are able to publish your website's URL then this will improve page rank, web positioning, etc (with a good content focused strategy as well).

Hey Guys

let me have a crack at helping!

1. Some directories can be useful for traffic purposes - yell.com etc
2. google places is great if you have a tangible place of trading e.g a shop (not so useful if you are an online service)
3. having a link in a directory creates a backlink to your site - when significant backlinks have been created that are from authoritative sources with good page rank (PR), you can be ranked in google, which can in tern improve your traffic rank. - this barely scratches the surface of SEO, please PM or reply back for some friendly information.
4. putting your address in the footer of your site may be helpful for instilling trust in potential customers, and also for those interested in knowing where you are based. it is in no way essential.

If you want to build up trust then make sure you link from your home page to - privacy policy - contact us - about us .if you want web trust lower your alexa rank ,theres people on ebay selling this service if needed. advertising in places such as gumtree or other local services directories is good for 2 things -real people searching for a business and also for ranking on google to push out another competitor . real trust from real people will only come when you are trusted to do what you say .

Displaying your address will not help with SEO directly but Google likes to see a contact page including your address or you could get penalised (pushed down the ranks) so to avoid this which would be detremental to SEO efforts your address on your contact page is essential

I think it's a bit confusing, but it is technically the case that the 'lower' the alexa rank (as in the lower the number) actually the more traffic you have, in other words the site listed number 1 is better than the site listed 100, so it has a lower rank... although it is a higher rank in another sense... confusing

There is also all the other places you could show your address, including this Forum. In the end it is all about credibility. I put together some links you could use at http://www.drachsi.com/business-networking.htm which might help.
