There are bandwagons and then there are bandwagons.
One of the current trends is definitely launching an iphone app, with the number of the things that are released accelerating almost exponentially day on day.
This has led to everyone asking the question "well should my business have an iphone app?" and many deciding yes they have to have one.
But the answer to the question is much simpler, because whether you're talking about the latest technology or not the way to work it out is pretty similar to usual.
You need to ask the basic questions such as:
- Well, what would my app offer to someone that would make them want to download it?
- What would be the purpose: free app that I bear the costs of but hope to get some 'customer engagement' from, or a profit making download
- Does anyone else already offer this app or something similar enough?
If everything seems positive thus far, then there's the question: OK so I launch a new app I really think people will want; how am I going to let anyone know about it amongst the 2 million other apps that release the same day as mine?
You need to answer that question too and only if you can come up with some realistic answer that does not involve the words "might get lucky" then think about creating it!
