SMO...

I've been away from the Forums for a while, but now I'm back, glad to see that not too much has changed. Having said that, I've just stumbled across a new acronym that I apparently have to add to my business lexicon: SMO

Social Media Optimisation. For those who haven't come across it yet, it's sort of a hybrid between SEO and viral marketing via social media platforms such as facebook and linked in. Basically it involves including your company and your website on as many of these platforms as possible.

To be honest it's part and parcel of good SEO practice but for some reason has got its own distinct title. It's like SEO with a twist - let's say you have a myspace, and a youtube channel, a linkedin profile, facebook and a page on e-cademy: you'd need to have them refer to one another so that they link back and forth, and then link to external listing sites like Digg so that people can find you, rate you, and spread the word about you. The way I'm understanding it is looking at it like SEO but with personal networking instead of search engines.

Is it just a buzzword, a passing trend, or something that actually works? Not sure if I'm understanding and/or explaining it right - can anyone else shed some light on SMO?

Not heard of the specific title SMO for this - guess people can't resist creating new acronyms!

It certainly makes sense to take advantage of free promotional opportunities when they come about and link them together... currently you can link ecademy, linked in and BT Tradespace with About My Business profiles and deeplinks to five pages on your website in addition to your homepage... if there are any other website profiles you'd like to be able to direct link too post 'em here

Argh, not another acronym... just when I was getting my head around exactly what SEO was - thanks Dan
