Spam tastic...

The conundrum:

When no-one visits a forum, no-one wants to post.

When finally you do start to get lots of members and regular posters you suddenly get inundated with spam posts that you have to delete.

Discuss!

Forums that offer sound advice do well, spammers do not bother with a lot of these places as they incorporate the 'no-follow' attribute.

All I did was register my business details with 3 websites like this one and now I have about 25 spam mail's in my inbox everyday. It's just maddness all you end up doing is deleting them anyway, without even looking them.

You need to be make sure that the forums you register with don't display your email address publicly else it can be harvested easily.

For instance on this site your email only displays on your profile to other members who view the page - never search engines or non-members - and then only if you choose to allow it to be displayed.

Sadly many sites allow anyone browsing the site (engines, robots) to view email addresses of members by default which makes them ripe for harvesting.

Another tip for countering spam - set an email address specific to the site you sign up to, e.g. businessforum @ mydomain.com

That way if the list does get sold on (or harvested by spam bots from a website) then you know where it came from... I tend to find large companies are the biggest offenders at passing on emails, I don't think any forums do it as that's not their business.
