The Apprentice Series 6...

By: Dan Moore [4-October-10 6:29PM]

Series six of the Apprentice is due to start on Wednesday at 9pm.

Apparently it was filmed last year but delayed so as it did not coincide with the general election and the preamble to it, due to BBC fears of impartiality being compromised with Alan Sugar's role in the previous Labour administration.

There has been some debate during previous series as to whether the Apprentice portrays businesspeople as too aggressive and cut-throat.

What do you think: is the portrayal of how to conduct business and perhaps beat the competition accurate? And does it matter either way when essentially it's just an entertainment show (or is it?)

Interesting that the guy who led the team in week one did so badly by being aggressive in his style and taking a hands off approach.

Reassuring that the world of work has changed and that sort of personality type achieves nothing.

So anyway that kind of illustrates that being aggressive and cut throat DOESN'T work which is good. Though I imagine in future weeks those traits will come out in the others and as long as they do it in a less obvious inyourface way they will achieve "success" through it in the tasks.

Let's be honest who does well in the apprentice is quite arbitrary and mainly based on luck. Now is that just like the workplace or not?

The trouble with many contestants is that they think that they have to make an impression all the time. The winner is not normally the biggest show-off or the biggest personality.

I wonder how many of the contestants actually behave in a normal business environment when compared to their performace on The Apprentice.

That's certainly true. I imagine there is quite a lot of temptation to play up to the cameras... it is always interesting to see how the candidates react on the 'You're Fired' show where generally they seem more normal!

Can I ask anyone whether they have learnt anything from the tasks in this series?

There were obvious lessons in episode 1? What about episode 2?

Not sure there was much to learn from episode two: I was surprised that the one who did nothing wrong got kicked out when all the others seemed to behave like animals!

I think that woman got chucked out because she was seen as doing nothing at all.

Trouble is, we do not see all the interaction, just the entertaining bits.

There was something very odd about last night's episode.

Why did the one team only make 16 of the rolls that were ordered, but apparently had hundreds of all sorts of other things that they sold throughout the day?

Of course the whole thing is extremely heavily cut but they seem to do it in such a way that lots of things make no sense at all!

The Dough task was strange as well. Surely it was not that difficult to make a 1,000 rolls. It seems that the kitchen team gave up.

They seem to be cutting it this year so that the team that does worst in the task somehow ends up winning it when it comse to the boardroom.

This year more than ever they seem to have gone on the looks of the individuals rather than there being something interesting about them.

It's good entertainment, as to the realism, well who knows. I lived in London for a few years and the only thing I noticed was popularity was generally dictated by the thickness of your wallet. Saying that I met some great people, who were more interested in football and women, but alas they were in the minority.

It is just a shame that the Apprentice is based more on looks than ability: that Liz looks like she should be a model rather than a businesswoman and she hasn't actually done anything yet, people just think as she is pretty she must be good but that's obviously not a real correlation!

I was very surprised that Liz went this week.

How on earth did Sugar fall for all the rubbish that "Stuart Baggs the Brand" was coming out with? Liz seems to have performed well throughout or certainly has been portrayed that way and even on this task had many more sales... yet Sugar seemed to be seduced by some tall tales.

Can anyone explain to me why on earth if someone is really running a company turning over £3,000,000 a year as Stuart said, and apparently making so much profit that he can buy a house, a fast car, live the luxury lifestyle etc at the age of 21 - and therefore clearly must be earning over £100,000 a year - why he would then chuck it all in to go and have a tiny chance of becoming the Apprentice and taking a massive pay cut?

It doesn't add up!

I was surprised to see Stella win.

I thought she was the best candidate so I'm pleased, but I really thought that he was going to pick Chris no matter what happened!

I suspect he was swayed by the fact that all the other people who have won have left within the year to do their own thing, so he wanted someone who at least there was a good chance really wanted the job and was going to stay in it, and Stella seemed to be that person.

Did seem a bit odd on the aftershow with Dara that they had Chris on for over 40 mins and Stella for no more than 20 as the winner though... maybe she turned up late for filming or something if it was filmed recently in the bad weather?!

Overall I thought this was a good series, and it did appear that unusually the best candidate won through in the end.

Look forward to there hopefully being another series of this before too long... one of the best TV shows there is and particularly business related, even if it is more entertainment than business!
