The outlook for Small Business in 2011...

It is a truth universally acknowledged that this has been a pretty tough year for small business.

Even those small businesses that have been run well have been hammered by being at the bottom of the chain and by all their clients further up the chain imposing tough conditions such as longer payment terms, negotiating hard on rates etc, or simply reducing their orders or stopping them completely to keep themselves afloat.

So what is the business outlook for 2011 - is it any better? Not sure if there is an 'official' line or prediction from the economists (the ones that all missed the credit crunch completely but are still in a nice cushy job)... but then again would we believe them again anyway!!

Let's face it, it's going to be tough, very tough and only those that can "Think out of the box" will prosper. It's also a matter of time. What you do now will take weeks and months before any results are known.

If you don't know what to ask, how will you understand the answer?

Hopefully a more positive outlook for small businesses this year.

To some extent it depends on whether the banks finally start lending more reasonably, hopefully this government will put more pressure on them than the previous government to do that... if the cash starts flowing again then that would be good for businesses this year.

My personal opinion is that things will improve as businesses adapt and are better suited to the conditions that we're currently in.

Of course, it won't be easy but I'm convinced 2011 will see improvements for a large majority.

Yes businesses need to be positive. They also need to ready for what could be around the corner whether this year or the next.

But yes the purse strings are being drawn a little tighter it seems for most.
