It is very easy to see evidence of Twitter's impact on our culture.Testament to the rapid rise in popularity of this social networking site are everywhere. Coming to any sensible conclusion as to why anyone should want to dedicate time informing everyone in the world what they are up to at any given moment is harder to do. Recent articles in the broadsheet press suggest that the answer lies in the idea of “being in the loop”. Experts place their estimates at 1.2 million active users producing a volume of around 2.25 million tweets every day. London leads the way worldwide, having the highest population of twitterers of any city and this is reflected throughout the UK. Putiing aside any personal cynicism you may feel, it seems that being aware of trends and your competitors on Twitter and perhaps even setting up your own account is worthwhile. This article includes tips on twittering. http://women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/the_way_we_live/article5754902.ece but there are many other articles around at the moment exhalting the pros and cons.

What is Twitter? I've heard of it & have a vague idea, but could you explain the basics?

Is there any benefit in terms of SEO by the way?

Twitter is a website whereby you post a small status update about yourself. I think the limit is 140 characters. So you might say "currently having a cup of tea", or in business something like "just about to arrange a really important meeting for my high powered exec friends"

The idea is everyone says what they are doing, it makes them feel important, and to add to the illusion, they 'follow' each others really-interesting-updates, and play the usual games such as seeing how many people they can get to follow them.

Basically, it is a way of wasting time, justified by the fact that if enough people want to waste their time they will start to think it isn't a waste of time after all, but actually important. No, I don't Twitter

Hi Sasha,

Thanks for that.

So can I assume, there is no benefit from an SEO point of view then?

I rarely use Twitter, but I have followed links that people have posted in their messages from time to time. Pete Arkwright (maybe post in his internet marketing club) would be a good one to ask as to whether these links are useful from a search engine, rather a human traffic, perspective...
