Link exchange is not that good these days, neither is directory mass submissions.
Best of all is relevant directories, niche-specific and keyword rich, as to what experts are saying. And we have to listen to them !

Forums are full of people that say this is good or that is bad especially where SEO is concerned.

As an owner of a website that ranks highly in an ultra competitive sector I personally dismiss nothing, unless my own research dictates.

What forums like this need are specifics, details of why a specific process is good or not, all backed up with meaningful research.

Repeating what's posted on other forums serves very little purpose.

Surely Google will see it is just a link exchange and you will not get indexed. You really have to be linked from the same type of sites as your product or service, or Wikipedia if possible.
