There are many ways to describe marketing, and it is different if you market for a company or for yourself. Self promotion is time consuming and there are many methods. I have found having Squidoo helps http://www.squidoo.com/creating-lenses and registering with employment sites, for Europe consider http://www.eurojobs.com/ which is great for finding staff and for listings.

Blogs are also necessary, my support blog is at http://uk-marketing.blogspot.com/ which I try to update often. How do you market yourself?

You make some good points.

Self promotion is time consuming, which is why many people either don't bother and then moan that their business (or themselves, if they are what they are marketing) is not doing as well as they would like.

However I do have sympathy as it is very hard to work out what promotion works and that which is useless.

Part of the reason I prefer smaller sites like this compared to giant social networks and forums is that there your message is instantly lost - when there are a million posts and people a day, then each message soon disappears and it is impossible to keep track of names.

At least on sites like this I feel that there is a chance you can get to know other posters and the regular names that appear; and since your posts remain and linger longer it may be more useful in terms of random connections then posting to one of the mega-networks where your material instantly disappears off the screen by ten other posts a minute later.
