What business types lend themselves to franchising?...

There are many thousands of franchise businesses out there, some of which are small and some are large.

Particularly well known large franchises, of course, include many national restaurants and so on.

What other sorts of business lend themselves well to franchising, and how does one go about franchising your business? It seems to me that this might be quite difficult as there is a lot to consider such as the costs of franchising, what to retain control of, the legal issues with regards to having others duplicating your business model under the franchise agreement and so on.

I suppose businesses where there is something that can be clearly reproduced in different geographical locations.

For instance things like businesses that sell food are obvious ones - think how many franchises there are such as mcdonalds and many other food chains that work along these lines, the same product no matter where you are, even apparently from country to country though I've not been to a mcdonalds abroad so don't know what they sell overseas

Businesses that depend on the knowledge or vision of one person that deliver a service are harder to franchise because knowledge and service standards vary from person to person where a product can be delivered the same everywhere.
