What is a vector graphic...

I have come across people discussing vector graphics a few times recently in talks about imagery for business cards and so on.

Can anyone explain (simply) what vector graphics are... presumably they are separate from 'normal' graphics

Vector graphics are those that are defined mathematically so that they can be scaled without loss of quality.

For instance if you have ever tried zooming in on a properly created pdf for instance you will notice that the curves on the letters are perfectly smooth no matter how much you zoom in.

However zoom in on a JPEG or GIF and you will see that they go all blocky and pixelated. That is the difference.

Cheers, Tim.

So a PNG image is not vector then as it's like a GIF, right?

Carl, PNGs will be rasterised, they are not vector graphics.

As Tim mentions, zoom in on an image and see if there is loss of quality to work out which is which, it is obvious once you try and do this.

A graphics format that uses shapes and lines, called paths. Vector graphics are resolution independent graphics that appear smooth and crisp regardless of how magnified the image is on screen. They also can be enlarged as big as you want them without having jagged edges. This format is best for line art and logos that don't require complicated coloring or textures.
