Which web browser do you use?...

By: Chris Thompson [15-March-07 6:47PM]

Having had an interesting answer to the question of what is different between firefox and internet explorer, I wondered what web browsers people here use?

Also what other browsers are there apart from IE and Firefox, and do any of them have advantages over those main two browsers?

Thanks!

Chris

I use Camino as my main browser, but also use Firefox and Safari.
A complete comparison of web browsers can be found on Wikipedia here:

Thanks Tema

Looks like a very interesting list - I had never even heard of Camino before!

Is there a particular reason you use that one rather than one of the more mainstream browsers?

I'm sure this is a rather boring answer, but I use Internet Explorer mainly and sometimes Firefox. If a site doesn't display quite right in one it usually does in the other.

Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera, Lynx for checking.

Normally use IE for general web browsing, and on occasion Firefox.

I use Internet Explorer though I do also have Firefox installed. Seems these two are by far the most common these days!

Internet Explorer still has the majority share but less than it did a couple of years ago, with the majority of that portion being eroded by Firefox...

Thanks all - seems we can conclude that IE is still the most used browser but there are more and more out there which people are using, seems to back up the statistics!

Chris

That seems like a fair summary, but Firefox is clearly in second place having come from nowhere in the last couple of years!

Use FireFox mainly but have IE7, IE6, Opera, Netscape and a few others for the purposes of checking compatibility.

Thanks... does anyone use Netscape anymore?!? Haven't heard that name online for about ten years when it used to be bigger than IE... the old days!

IE will obviously be the most used because it is packeged with Windows and most people will trust the compatibility being a Microsoft product.

I use both. Mainly Firefox at home though. Just seems to be easily customisable without the need to register with any 3rd parties. The add-ons seem to be more intuitive that IE too. For business I use IE7.

I also like to familiarise myself with both for supporting our website (Customer queries)

Netscape is now dead - no further development.

Internet Explorer is now down to only 61% of Internet users, Firefox is gaining quicker than ever!

One of my friends uses something called Safari, sounds very exotic to me - no idea what it is I'd never even heard of it, perhaps he is just trying to be different!!!

I'm the opposite to Uncle Buck - Firefox at work and IE7 at home! I prefer Firefox but not that much more than explorer.

Hi Sasha

Most people who don't use a Mac probably won't have heard of Safari, as it's a browser for the Mac.

Cheers

Read on BBC News today that Netscape is officially dead, in that it won't be supported anymore... anyone else remember when this was the only web browser out there?

I use Internet Explorer. It has always been sufficient for my needs and allows for the viewing of almost all websites.

I think that if Firefox was named something less catchy, it would not have been so popular.

Safari is a browser made by Apple and used to be only available on their Mac computers.
Since June 2007, however, it has been available for Windows computers too.

Safaris... Amazon... Firefox... there are some very creative and interesting sounding names out there.

By contrast 'internet explorer' kind of does what it says on the tin!!! Obviously two very different marketing approaches there!

If you like the old Netscape browser you might be interested in the Seamonkey Project. It's based on the Firefox browser but has an uncanny resemblance to Netscape, especially as it is an all-in-one internet solution; web browser, email client, HTML editor, etc, just like Netscape was. Google it and have a look.

As for me, I prefer Firefox because of the ability to customise it. And if a webpage only supports Internet Explorer you can download an add-on to Firefox so that it users the IE engine to display the page. Sorted!
