I'm not much of a computer expert, however I know when vista came out there were lots of reports of bugs and errors.

Things seem to have settled down on that front recently, so I believe that it might be better than things seemed at the time.

In other words it is probably same enough to get a vista machine even if you are used to xp, I believe there are quite a few differences but as ever it depends what you want to use it for, for simply using internet, email etc I imagine the applications are the same so the experience will be similar too. I could be wrong of course!

My mother in law got Vista. I use XP.

I have an unwarranted reputation in my family for being good with PCs. Just because I make a living online???

Thats a bit like saying that someone who builds car showrooms is a great mechanic.

Anyway I tried to help her achieve some of the simplest tasks with her new Vista machine and it was horrendous. Not perhaps because Vista, of itself is complicated. But more because it is different. Unlike the jump from say 95 - 98 or ME to XP where basic tasks are just about identical.

VISTA IS DIFFERENT. Be prepared to re learn a thing or 2.

Here is a suggestion. Get a machine with nothing on it? Or Linux because they are much cheaper. Then, if possible use your own(or borrow someone else's) Windows XP discs to install. Then use your existing serial number to activate it. As long as you uninstall/format your old machine this should save you money and be legal.

Maybe.

All the best,

John.

Making money online does not have to be complicated.

Why don't you give an on-line vista tutorial a go? There are quite a few available http://www.learnthat.com/Software/learn/1159/Free-Microsoft-Windows-Vista/
Good luck with your new laptop http://www4.hp.com/products/hp-laptop-computers.html

As far as I'm aware you shouldn't have any particular problems getting a Vista machine

In fact you will struggle to get a new laptop with anything other than Vista, how's that for monopolisation?

I have vista, and it did take getting used to,the thing that gets me mad is that i have software that i used on xp but can not get it to work on Vista (even though they said it would work)good way of making money, and now Windows 7 is out you can upgrade if you have Vista on your computer.
How good is 7,god knows, who knows, does Microsoft know.If vista was very good they would not have made this windows 7.
The truth is vista has had a load of problems,i heard that PC world told microsoft they did not want vista on their computers, that they sell because there was so much pain with Vista.Has the old saying goes if it works well leave it be perhaps that is what they should have done with xp,just polished it up,a bit of work on the engine.
They threw xp out of the window and the found out people wanted it back.

I'm a lot happier now with Windows 7 than I was with Vista. Microsoft seem to have fixed a lot of the issues which made Vista lag a LOT! 7 also uses less system resources so there's more free to be productive with.

That all being said, I still use XP in the office due to compatability with old software/firmware. If it ain't broke...

Best,
Chris

Yes - windows 7 is a lot better than Vista which is thankfully now pretty much consigned to history
