Working from home: good idea or not?...

With the advent of the snow and inclement weather in recent weeks (to the inconvenience of us all), the debate about working from home and its various virtues and vices has come to the fore again.

Many companies allowed employees to work from home on a needs-must basis over the last couple of weeks as that was better than doing no work at all.

In many lines of work these days if you have an internet connection and a mobile then it would seem you can do your job just as effectively at home as in the office, particularly for desk / office based jobs like many people do these days.

So is the idea of working from home something that more companies should adopt and allow employees, say, one or two days working from home each week?

It seems that employees who do work from home occasionally enjoy it and say that they are more productive, and generally become more positively inclined toward the company they work for as they believe it shows trust in them.

But is working from home actually a good idea or do the potential pitfalls outweigh the benefits?

It would be interesting to see what member's take is on the working from home issue and whether it is a good or bad idea...

Working from home offers flexibility but it also requires true self-discipline and organisation. Making a mental and physical distinction between your home and your working life is essential, both to resist the distractions of the television or garden, and, at the other end of the scale, to prevent work from wholly consuming your life.

Creating a dedicated working area is essential, while separate telephone lines for home and business could help you to maintain the boundary between 'work' and 'home' time.

Agree with the above: working from home works brilliantly as long as you are disciplined.

I think there's a difference between working from home FOR YOURSELF and working from home FOR A COMPANY. With the latter it is much more tempting to see it as a jolly and go out for an extra long lunchbreak down the pub etc, get up at 8.59 and switch the phone on then lie in bed for an hour - why not, you get paid either way.

However when you work for yourself that mentality does not exist - if you don't do the work then you don't get paid, so that really focuses the mind and makes you work just as hard and probably harder than you would in the office (less distractions such as office cooler talk and idling away at least an hour in pointless convos and meetings that you would do in an office).
