Your favourite business directory?...

I would like to understand which is your favourite business directory when you are looking for a supplier (any type of supplier for products or services) in the context of your business?

Hi Ingrid

Whilst it's still fairly small I have found a couple of useful companies in areas I've been interested in listed in the business directory here (the business finder field).

Do you know of any good business directories? If so we could start a collection of useful links here!

I believe searching on something like Yell is a simple way to have access to a large range of suppliers across a range of business services.

I imagine most people use one of the few large directories, though in total there are literally thousands of the things out there!

I am sure that all of us use directories on a regular basis to search for suppliers for business and personal purposes. I would love to hear which directories you use so that we can share this information.

I use the following on a regular basis:
- scoot.co.uk
- yell.com
- ecademy.com
- thomsondirectories.com
- aboutmybusiness.co.uk
- freeindex.co.uk
- city-visitor.com
Look forward to your feedback on your favourite directories.
Regards
Ingrid

Hi Ingrid

Good list! Which of those do you find the most useful?

Thanks Dan, I use a mix myself depending what I am looking for.

For personal purposes such as plumbers, local services like drycleaning, DIY, etc, I use scoot.co.uk, yell.com and city-visitor.com

For business purposes, I use ecademy.com and aboutmybusiness.co.uk as I want to go by recommendation and trust.

Any other views would be much appreciated.
Regards
Ingrid

Does anyone still use traditional offline directories, such as either the standard Yellow Pages or the Business Pages? (the red one)

Have to admit I try and find everything online these days... seems easier than trawling through a manual list!

Chris, thanks for your posting. My posting related to online directories and therefore I am also interested to know which online directories you use as I am trying to get a picture?

Whenever I want information I just tend to google it - so I would probably type into Google 'plumbers in X' or whatever... then click on one of the top three or so links from there: these are usually directories anyhow so you stumble across what you want that way!

Interesting what Tim says - I think this is probably still what most people do.

Recent research (can't remember where I read this else would post reference ) has suggested that only 10% of people could name the actual web address of more than 5 websites, which just shows that search engines are still the gateway to all information for most people.

Just be careful if your looking to improve page rankings
as some sites could be blacklisted.

Hi Raptor

Is there a way of finding out if a site is black listed in advance?

Presumably it can't actually harm your site to add from a 'bad' site, because otherwise that bad site could for instance just link to all its competitors and reduce their ranks without permission which surely wouldn't make sense?
