When Do You Have To Become VAT Registered?
As a one-man business, I've never thought about VAT registration. However I believe there is a figure around which you have to become VAT registered in terms of turnover - does anyone know what this figure is? Thomas

The VAT thresholds changed recently to take account of the budget 2008 provisions.
Mandatory VAT registration is now necessary when taxable turnover reaches £67,000.
My accountants informed me of this recently.

I understand if you have a turnover above £64,000 you must register for VAT. However, you can volunteer to register at any rate. Needless to say any company expenses (inc petrol etc) can be claimed back once you are registered. It all adds up.
www.hmrc.gov.uk. will give you all the info you might need.
Hope this helps. Sue
