Wireless networking vs standard broadband...

Hi All

Am considering changing to wireless internet in my house now we have a couple of machines so that both are on the internet - currently fixed broadband connection.

My question is a simple one: if we move to wireless, will it slow down the speed of the access to the internet? Currently it's nice and quick so wouldn't want to slow it down if possible!

Thanks!

Sarah

There shouldn´t be any reduction in speed at all, only the method of access is being changed through using wireless through a router, but the connection will still be through broadband in your case.

Standard 802.11g routers are 54Mb/sec. Your Internet connection is probably between 512Kb/sec and 8Mb/sec. You will rarely get the full 54Mb from wireless just as you will rarely get the full bandwidth from your Internet connection. There should be no slowdown with wireless. The only problem with wireless is the number of users these days. There are only 12 wireless channels and if all of your neighbours are using wireless this could conflict with and slow down your wireless access.

If this is the case another alternative to delivering network access around the house with wireless is to use HomePlug. This plugs into you mains electricity and delivers and network connection from point to point in the house via the mains and runs at up to 85Mb/sec.

Hi Sarah,

Wired is always better than wireless! Any reason you want to go wireless? Wireless depends on the the operating environment (placing of the router, the walls, other devices in the house)and depending on the Network you might have to get wireless print servers etc to make sure all working well.

Unless you've got a superfast broadband connection 10MB+ you won;t see any difference in speed as your broadband connection is normally the slowest link in the chain.

I use wireless here at home but that's only because hiding cables in my house is impossible. If you're already wired don;t change, but if you want to surf while you're in the garden add a wireless point to your wired netowrk and have the best of both worlds.

IMPORTANT: Don;t forget to protect any wireless network from snoopers though
