Bad Times or not?...

I have been running a couple of shops on line for a few years now, but I have never ever found it is as quite as things are now.
Even Currys have said that some branches will close shortly, as well as quite a number of other shop departments we see in the high streets.
Has anyone on here found things have gone quite I wonder? and is it the case that it may be that the smaller shops may get through thing next few years, but larger one's wont.
Electricity costs seem to be the big reason that most firms are closeing, and they seem to be going up again soon, smashing yet more firms.
Bye
David

Hi David

Interesting to hear that times are hard online though of course I'm sorry to hear it. I had wondered if the downturn on the highstreet would also be reflected online - I guess, sadly, it makes sense that it is.

Is there anything you can do to ride out the rough period by offering discounts or marketing more heavily to your existing customers?

Interesting... I wondered if the credit crunch would drive more people online to get cheaper prices and actually boost rather than reduce sales.

I have heard anecdotally some have had a good year so far and others a not so good year - which reflects perhaps that it depends what type of product each vendor is selling online.

One of my friends runs a moderately successful online clothing shop - I asked him how things were going and he says business is about the same levels this year as last year, so not really feeling the pinch yet.

Interesting to see what the overall stats figures show...

Hello,
Many thanks all for the nice replys from my posting on here, and the latest is that things are still quite, lots more high street shops are empty here in Norfolk/Suffolk area than I have seen in all my life.
Banks, Building Soc & Charity shops are still plenty in most towns still, and are mostly the largest shop owners here, but higher costs coming soon of Elec/Gas charges will I feel kill off a lot more shops.
Thank heavens shops like my own just on the net have very low running costs mostly, unless you decide to have one of them rented one's at £20 per month.
Bye all,
thanks
David

Article today in the paper - online takings and business are actually UP as people are moving away from the high street to avoid higher costs and even the petrol price of physically driving somewhere.

I think certain sectors of society are tightening their belts but I would imagine that young people for example with no mortgages and still living at home are spending as much as ever on clothes etc. I would also imagine that the current climate will favour shops such as Primark and Lidle and Aldi as people seek out bargains.
