Which broadband provider is best?...

There are now tens of broadband service providers out there. It's very complicated to compare as many have different price bands depending how many services you take with that company.

Any thoughts on which offers the best value for money / good service? Happy with what I have at the moment but always interested what else is out there and any good(!) experiences that people may have had!

I think it may be more a case of which is the least worst

Sorry - not very helpful I know; been experiencing a few problems of late with my connection going dead for half hours at a time!

It's very difficult to answer that one. I have used several and none are particularly brilliant. It depends if its business or home and how much you are willing to pay. Most fall down on customer service. I have experience of Blueyonder, Tiscali, BT, Easynet, and a couple of other small ones. A good one for business is Nildram. I have never heard anything bad about them from users but they are more expensive than some.

Will Virgin Media be any better than NTL? What's in a name...

If Virgin trains is anything to go by I doubt it. I noticed last night that the bootup logo had changed to Virgin on my PACE Telewest box.

As an ISP ourselves, I'll try and be as objective as possible.
Broadband for consumers and businesses differs greatly. You may find that certain 'free' providers work well for your requirements but not for others. The best source of info I can recommend is:

and, of course, word of mouth. What do your colleagues/friends/family recommend?

I have been with a company called Zen Internet for some time now, they are probably one of the most expensive ones around but very reliable. They have won many awards for quality of service. www.zen.co.uk

NTL, sorry Virgin Media, are fine when things are ok but when they go wrong... you can spend a long time waiting for support, which is usually 'switch the box back off and back on again'!

Thanks for posting that list Nigel... I'm on Virgin Media so that doesn't look too healthy does it

Can't remember what percentage of each ISP's customers they questioned, but the table was showing customer satisfaction. There as always were diffences in the package, price etc but I don't think that factored into the results.

It would be interesting to see how closely together they were all ranked for customer satisfaction - generally I would imagine most people rank themselves as reasonably unsatisifed to reasonably satisfied, though perhaps there are a few "extremely satisfied" customers out there!

I find Virgin not too bad... the problems come when the connection drops, basically all you can do is sit and wait it out (you can't really read the updates posted on the website when you can't connect to it after all!)
