Does anyone know of a site that can source you lists of businesses (and their contact details) split by certain criteria: e.g. where they are based, number of employees, sector they operate in etc etc

I looked for something similar a few months back, Tim - from what I could tell virtually all good quality data that you want sourced comes with a hefty price tag attached. Therefore if at all possible it may be better to try and source the information yourself, unless you are looking for a very large list in which case it might not be practicable...

Experian offer a service where you choose your own categories eg. geographic, comapny size, etc you can break it down to find exactly what you want and it works out at around 10p per company but it all comes in a neat little database and you choose how many you want. www.prospectlocator.com
